Water damage

9/14/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage is caused by a water intrusion that attacks a material or surface, saturating everything in its path. Natural flooding, leaky roofs, burst pipes, broken dishwashers, and ruptured water heaters are potential causes of water spewing into your home.

A seemingly harmless leak can be problematic and costly. Water damage can absorb materials, rust steel, and rot wood. Leaks can damage drywall, insulation, flooring, carpets, and hardwood. Flooding can also cause structural damage to your building and the longer water sits, the more likely it can result in microbial growth. That is why the extraction process must begin immediately to prevent further damage.

How Long Does It Take for Water Damage to Occur?

Water can cause destruction instantly. As a leak or flood spreads, it will soak everything in its vicinity. Personal belongings can immediately bulge and warp beyond repair. Soft furnishings and upholstery will soak through, and walls and floors will begin to absorb the water. Drywall, furniture, wooden doors, and window frames can swell. Plus, paint or wallpaper can peel or blister, effecting electrical systems.

Call SERVPRO of Warren County at (513) 932-3649 for any water damages. We are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Content storage after a damage

5/26/2022 (Permalink)

Nowadays, we hold many of our memories and keepsakes digitally on our computers, phones, family videotape, and more. Please note that water-damaged electronics can present a serious hazard so do not attempt to operate any of them in the wake of water damage.

More traditionally, valuable documents like wedding certificates and photographs make our house a home. Extreme caution must be taken with items like these because they can be delicate and easy to destroy. Although some documents may not be restored to pre-water damage condition, SERVPRO Warren County may be able to save a great deal of them and help minimize further damage. Depending on the type of documents and the level of water damage, we have five options for the restoration process: air-drying, dehumidification, freezer drying, vacuum freeze-drying, and vacuum thermal drying.

Salvaging Your Water-Damaged Belongings

It’s important to quickly take note of affected items if damage from water in your home has recently threatened your possessions. Follow some of these tips to recover items as best as possible.

• If objects are still wet, rinse with clear water first. You can also wipe off dry debris with a soft cloth or brush. This prevents any remaining debris or silt from further harming your items.

• Whenever possible, allow objects to air-dry indoors. Avoiding sunlight can help prevent warping and buckling of many materials.

• Airflow and quality is important while recovering your items. Use open windows, fans, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers to your advantage while drying out your belongings. Also, be sure to preclude any mold or mildew from growing in the space.

• If there are metal objects that have been exposed to flood water, wash with clear water and dry with a clean cloth as soon as you’re able.

• For clothing and other textiles, dry cleaning is often the most effective method of preservation. Air dry first and take to a professional soon.

Get Help From a Professional

What Not to Do Tips

Often when a fire occurs, especially at a business, you won’t only have fire damage, but water damage as well. Due to sprinklers and fire hoses, water also plays a part in this disaster.

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting us.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat, or water.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.

The easiest way you can do this is by staying home as much as possible, and by consistently cleaning highly used areas inside your own home. This can be especially important if anyone in your home is an essential employee or if anyone has been out and about during that day.

Here is a list of some high touch areas of your home that can be very susceptible to germs-

  • Doorknobs
  • Light Switches
  • Fridge, Sink and Microwave Door Handles
  • Remotes
  • Phones
  • Keys

Biohazard

10/15/2021 (Permalink)

What is a biohazard?

A biohazard consists of a substance that has microorganisms or chemical components that are detrimental to your health. Think sewage, blood, tear gas, feces, and more...all of these are biohazards. Due to the dangerous nature of biohazards, you shouldn’t necessarily just clean them up and dispose of them with an ordinary rag and soap, as you could potentially expose yourself to harmful chemicals or biological contaminants. This means that biohazards need a special type of cleaning called biohazard cleaning to properly remove all traces of the biohazards from wherever they are present.

What are biohazard scenarios?

So now that you know what a biohazard is, what are biohazard scenarios that you may find yourself in? Biohazard scenarios include, but are not limited to, the following.

  • Sewage backups
  • Crime Scene Residue
  • Suicide/death accidents
  • Homicide cleanups
  • Blood cleanup
  • Accident cleanup
  • Hoarding scenes
  • Animal waste/remains
  • Chemical spills
  • Tear gas cleanup
  • Meth lab cleanup

All of these scenarios should be navigated with caution, and you should call a professional biohazard cleanup company to deal with their aftermath.

What is biohazard cleaning and how does it resolve the above scenarios?

As mentioned earlier, biohazard cleaning consists of removing biological, chemical, and pathogenic contaminants from the above scenarios by using safety apparatus, proper biohazard gear, and sanitation solutions that are OSHA-approved in accordance with health regulations.

We have a specially trained team on hand to perform biohazard cleaning at a moment’s notice, no matter the time of day. Here at SERVPRO of Warren County, you can rest assured that your biohazard scenario will be cleaned up in no time and you will no longer have to worry about risking your health in the presence of the scene. Contact us at (513) 932-3649 to learn more.

Storm water

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

Stormwater runoff is rain that has not been soaked into the ground, so it flows over the ground until it finds somewhere to go. Ideally, the water would find a stream or river to flow into, but this is not always the case. Sometimes the water will flow straight into your house. Water damage is never fun, and trying to get rid of water as well as clean up the rest of the mess a storm has left behind can be a real hassle. The best way to handle stormwater runoff is to make sure it doesn’t happen to begin with. If you are up for a bit of landscaping, you can optimize your yard to keep stormwater away from your building.

  • Swales: Simply put, a swale is just a type of trench meant to carry water and redirect it away from something important. If you decide to install swales in your yard, make sure they are redirecting somewhere that the water will not cause damage such as a stream or pond.
  • Rain Gardens: These gardens are designed with plants that are able to take up excess water to keep it from flowing freely. They also help filter the water so that the water that does reach ponds and rivers tends to be cleaner than water that has just flowed over driveways and roads.
  • Draining Driveways: Driveways are one of the largest contributors to stormwater runoff. Installing drainage areas on the sides of the pavement or using gravel can help minimize the amount of water that becomes runoff.

Prepare for flood damage

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

A lot of people enjoy a good rainstorm. However, some thunderstorms can lead to flash flooding in most areas with heavy rainfall. It's important to know your surroundings and keeping up with local weather alerts.

Below are a few tips to be mindful of during the next storm:

  • Sand Bags (keep stock of sand bags to assist with preventing water intrusion)
  • Stay Tuned in with your local weather station
  • Don't drink the water (make sure to boil water to destroy most types of disease-causing microorganisms).
  • Be overprotective
  • Keep away from moving water
  • Check on your neighbors
  • Have emergency plan in place

When the water has resided and its time to start the cleaning process use these tips:

  • Get Help (Call SERVPRO of Warren County)

Water damage timeline

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

We all get very busy with our day to day schedules and water damage can really put a wrench in your plans. As inconvenient and  time consuming as it may be, leaving water damage for even 1 day can make things significantly worse.

Within Minutes water will spread throughout your property soaking into drywall, upholstery and other belongings.

Within the first 24 hours drywall will spread and break, metal surfaces begin to tarnish and a musty odor becomes present.

Within 48 hours to a week mold and mildew grow and spread, paint blisters, wood flooring swells and doors and windows swell and warp.

After 1 week of being untreated, the time and money needed for restoration significantly increase and the home or business may no longer be structurally sound.

If you travel south for the winter have a friend or family member check on your home every few days and if your business has a basement be sure to check it regularly.

Sump pump and how it works

10/11/2021 (Permalink)

A sump pump eliminates moisture and prevents flooding by collecting excess water from drains and pumping it out and away from the building. You will find a sump pump sitting in a specially constructed pit that sits lower than the basement floor in homes that are susceptible to major rain and snow fall.

If your pump stops working, water could get into your basement and foundation walls. This may cause mold and mildew to grow and if enough water builds up, the basement can flood.

How do you know your sump pump is working?

You can check your sump pump tow different ways. Two separate plugs are attached to the unit. Unplug them both and then plug in only the one for the pump. If the pump does not immediately turn on then something is wrong. Your other option is to add water and wait to see if the pump turns on and properly evacuates the water.

Sump pump

10/6/2021 (Permalink)

What do sump pumps do?

The main purpose of a sump pump is to send water away from your home to a place where it won’t cause any problems. It collects water coming into a building from rain, melting snow, etc, and leads it out. Without a sump pump, your home may flood, or build up high levels of water and moisture. These can be damaging to your home and the things within it.

How exactly does it work?

A sump pump is typically located on the bottom floor of a home to prevent flooding. Its purpose is to collect water and dispose of it, but how exactly does it do that? All of the water collected from the sump pump is drained into pits beneath it. The water is then pumped from those pits away from the home’s foundation, whether it's to a drain or elsewhere. A sump pump isn’t always running because the amount it does depends on the amount of water and moisture your home has that needs to be drained.

Next time it rains just know that your sump pump is doing its job to protect your home. Here at SERVPRO of Middletown Springboro, we want to ensure you and your home's safety.

Backup or overflow

10/6/2021 (Permalink)

What is the difference between a water backup and an overflow?  Overflow is caused by a blockage in the plumbing system.  Water causing damage never enters the sewer system and in some cases, water damage can be considered an overflow if blockage is in the lateral pipe.  It all depends on insurance policy language.  A backup is a situation where water or sewage enters through drains or sewers or overflows from a sump pump, sump pump well or any other system designed to remove subsurface water which is drained from a foundation area.  A water backup is excluded in most Homeowners policies but coverage can be added with an endorsement.  Coverage is usually limited to a specified amount but a few insurance companies offer more extensive options.  Water backup coverage is critical for not only homeowners but condo owners, renters and commercial insureds as well.

Keep in mind that any property can experience a backup and the damage can be expensive especially if the area is finished.  There are four main areas to consider when deciding how much coverage you need including mitigation or drying out the area, structure reconstruction, contents damage and mechanicals such as furnace and water heater.  Be sure to discuss the right coverage option with your insurance agent so you are well protected in the event of a backup event.

Document restoration

10/6/2021 (Permalink)

What’s the best way to handle and clean personal papers in a fire loss that have been damaged by soot and also smell? The homeowner wants to keep them and won’t let me throw them away.

Personal papers like bills, canceled checks, credit card statements and everyday magazines have no value in the eyes of the insurance company and they often don’t want to pay for them to be cleaned or deodorized. However, they often have value to the homeowner.

The biggest problem with this is that paper can hold a lot of odor and may re-contaminate the house once everything is unpacked. So first off, we check with the homeowner and see if the paperwork is something that they can live without. Or is it really important and needs to be kept? Once you explain that the papers can hold a lot of odor and may cause recontamination of the house and belongings, this will sometimes make the homeowner more aggressive about putting them in the round file.

If the paperwork cannot be parted with and must go on the “keep it list,” then we dust them off and organize them into a large bag. This is a heavy duty plastic bag that keeps the odor and contamination contained until the homeowner can photo copy or reprint the documents they want to keep. The cost to the insurance company to handle them this way is really no more than their cost would be to throw them away, so this keeps your adjuster and homeowner happy.

This also allows the homeowner to go through the papers at their convenience as they are dealing with a lot of pressing decisions in the first few days after a fire. Having one less pressing thing to have to handle right away can be a huge relief for them.

Space heaters

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

With the weather getting colder, more people will be reaching for their space heaters. When using these types of heaters, please remember to never plug them into a power strip. Power strips cannot handle the high current flow needed for a space heater and can overheat and catch fire due to the added energy. It is always best for you to plug space heater directly into wall outlets. Follow these safety tips below to see how you can prevent a fire from starting in your home.

  • Regularly check the cord of your heater. If it is damaged, frayed, or worn out stop using the heater.
  • Keep the cord away from heat.
  • Leave enough space the heater to allow for heat dissipation. Also, keep flammable materials away from heat.
  • Always unplug unused appliances.

If you experience fire damage in your home please contact SERVPRO of Warren County!

How smoke and soot damage your property

9/22/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Warren County has the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition. Every fire is different, and smoke and soot creates a unique type of damage.

Smoke and soot damage is created after a fire has been extinguished in a home or a business, soot residue settles into the property. Soot is a very fine, black powder substance which binds to walls and fabric.

Like soot, smoke damage can be problematic, and it can cause potentially serious health effects. It will cause discoloration of walls and it will sink into all property contents, causing smoke odor to linger for long periods of time.

This is why it is extremely important to hire a professional fire mitigation company to restore the damage.

The type of smoke or soot damage will define how we clean and treat the affected areas, but our process has several steps. We are trained extensively on all types of soot or smoke damage and if you contact as quickly enough, we will be able to restore most items.

Fires can happen at any time, day or night. The most important thing is quick response time that’s why SERVPRO of Warren County is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week.

Emergency kit

9/17/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Warren County is no stranger to storms, water damage, etc. The trained professionals there know that the possibilities are endless when it comes to any type of natural disaster or weather emergency, which is why we want to remind everyone in our servicing areas to have their emergency kits stocked and ready to go.

Here are some items that could be included in an emergency kit:

  • Band-Aids
  • Alcohol pads
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Battery-powered radio and batteries
  • Whistle if needed to signal for help

If pets are involved, tweak the emergency kit a bit to include pet food, a spare leash/collar, and other pet supplies that will be needed. Our servicing area is full of tech-savvy people who you could probably call for help if needed, but it is important to be prepared for when technology fails, especially when water is involved. If areas are flooded in any way, make sure to stay out of the water because electricity travel through water. That is why SERVPRO of Warren County urges you to have your kit ready if needed!

Emergency ready plans for businesses

9/17/2021 (Permalink)

Like the majority of commercial properties and businesses, your facility probably has an emergency exit plan in place, with illuminated signs leading occupants to safety, and even facility maps strategically placed to identify alternate routes out of the building.  But have you developed a thorough contingency plan?  Is the emphasis on the first 24-48 hours, to help you get back in your building as quickly as possible?  SERVPRO of Warren County, can provide you assistance in developing an Emergency Ready Profile.  Even better, it will be at NO COST to you.

As part of a well-thought out contingency plan, your Emergency Ready Profile will contain  information you need in the event an emergency situation occurs.  An added advantage to utilizing SERVPRO of Madison, Lawrenceburg and Versailles in the development of your Emergency Ready Profile, is the opportunity to coordinate a preferred provider relationship.  You will be familiar with our technicians and we will be familiar with your facility and key persons of contact.  These small things could make a BIG difference when an emergency situation occurs.

The unexpected

Why commercial cleaning is important to businesses of all sizes

Why is maintaining professional commercial cleaning from a company like SERVPRO of Warren County so important? Here are some of the benefits of prioritizing workplace cleanliness:

  • It reduces the need to replace supplies and equipment as often. When dirt and grime are left to build up, they will cause unnecessary wear-and-tear on your office equipment. Flooring can become stained and unkempt, and office furniture left uncared for is unsightly, not to mention unsanitary. Regular professional commercial cleaning and maintenance will save you costly replacements of these items.
  • It can help you find and fix damages before they become a problem. Regular deep cleaning can help you catch issues you might not notice. Regular cleaning maintenance can help you see the signs of water damage and mold growth that may otherwise go unnoticed. Damage from leaks are much easier to deal with at the beginning of the issue and easier to resolve. The longer the damage from a water leak goes on, the higher the costs for repairs are going to be and the higher the risk of mold.
  • It can positively affect employee morale. An unclean workplace makes it difficult to concentrate and has been proven to cause stress, especially for those people who are highly sensitive to uncomfortable surroundings. When your workers are happy and productive, your customers and clients will know it, and an atmosphere of positivity will affect your business by encouraging repeat sales and referrals.
  • It gives your business an image and reputation of professionalism. If your business looks like a mess, most people may assume it’s unprofessional. Water-stained walls, dirty carpets, unkempt furniture and machinery, and dusty light fixtures can give your prospective customers the idea that you are not a professional business. Simple commercial cleaning on a regular basis can help address this

Water damage

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

When you are experiencing a flood or leak in your home, your first reaction may be to get the water out as quickly as possible no matter the cause. Not so fast! Every water damage is different and it's important to understand those differences when addressing the problem. When you call the restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Warren County our first priority is to identify the source of the unwanted water. This will allow us to assign that water to a category of 1, 2, or 3. Knowing the category of water is imperative so that our technicians can properly clean and sanitize your home using specific restoration processes.

Category 1 water (white or clean): this water is the cleanest and most non-toxic of the categories. It is water perhaps directly from the tap and is not likely to cause you harm. Although it is considered the cleanest of the categories, it can be downgraded to category 2 or 3 if it comes in contact with other surfaces.

Category 2 (gray water): this type of water damage is considered more serious and will require a speedier removal process. This water may contain unsafe levels of chemicals, dirt or microorganisms. Example of gray water include leaks from dishwashers and washing machines, aquarium water and clean water from a toilet bowl or tank.

Category 3 (black water): this type of water contains toxigenic, pathogenic, or other harmful agents and includes sewage, toilet backflows, seawater, river flooding or other contaminated sources.

Our technicians are trained to identify the source and category of the unwanted water in your home. Based on our assessment they can immediately begin to dry out the affected areas using the appropriate equipment and resources to ensure a healthy environment for your family. Call us anytime day or night at 513-422-9200 for restoration services.

Different kinds of water damages

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

There is nothing like water invading your home or business to put a damper on your day. The most common cause of loss within a structure are things that we need and use everyday. Appliances are one of the top reasons for water to enter the structure such as a air conditioner, water heater or even a dish washer. Always make sure to check on all appliances monthly to assure that you everything is still intact. The roof on the structure needs to be replaced every few years and always inspected to make sure there isn't any damage that has been done to it. All the pipes throughout the home should be monitored especially in the colder times of the year. The last most common cause is something we can not avoid but just make sure we stay ahead of is mother nature. Keep in-tune with the weather and make sure to prepare your home or business for the worst to protect your business or

Lighting storms

5/27/2021 (Permalink)

Contact SERVPRO Warren County at 513-932-3649 if your property is damaged by lightning storms.

It’s hard to know what to do when you are caught out in the open during a lightning storm. To take shelter under a big tree? To stand out in the open?

The best strategy is prevention. Monitor the weather forecast before going out, and look for darkening skies, lightning, or increasing wind. You are in danger if you can hear thunder. Therefore, find shelter in either a building or car.

If you are in the open, then be a very small target! Squat low to the ground. Lying on the ground will actually make you a larger target. If you are in the woods, then take shelter under shorter trees or go to a low-lying, open place away from trees, poles, or metal objects. If you are boating or swimming, then get to shore and find shelter.

Call 911 if someone is struck by lightning. If the person’s breathing has stopped, then begin rescue breathing. A trained person should give CPR if the victim’s heart has stopped breathing.

What is an Ice Dam

2/26/2021 (Permalink)

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and other areas.

Moisture entering the home from ice dams could lead to the growth of mold and mildew.

  • Prevent the growth of mold and mildew by immediately drying out portions of the house that are wet or damp.
  • Take immediate action to get rid of the water source, clean the home environment and maintain its air quality.

Heat loss from a house, snow cover and outside temperatures interact to form ice dams. For ice dams to form there must be snow on the roof and, at the same time, higher portions of the roof's outside surface must be above 32 degrees F (freezing) while lower surfaces are below 32 degrees. These are average temperatures over sustained periods of time. For a portion of the roof to be below freezing, outside temperatures must also be below freezing.

The snow on a roof surface that is above freezing will melt. As water flows down the roof it reaches the portion of the roof that is below 32F and freezes. This causes the ice dam.

The dam grows as it is fed by the melting snow above it, but it will limit itself to the portions of the roof that average below 32F. So the water above backs up behind the ice dam and remains a liquid. This water finds cracks and openings in the exterior roof covering and flows into the attic space. From the attic it could flow into exterior walls or through the ceiling insulation and stain the ceiling finish.

Choosing a restoration company

12/22/2020 (Permalink)

Choosing a Restoration Company

The restoration process can be complex after a commercial property, damaged by a flood, fire or storm. There are many ways a restoration company with 24-hour availability can improve the process of restoration for insurance agents, adjusters and business owners.

1. Receive Answers Quickly

During the restoration of a commercial property, decisions often need to be made quickly. If a restoration company is not able to respond to questions in a timely manner, business owners may feel inclined to attempt to handle a problem themselves, which can be a costly mistake. However, a restoration business that offers a fast response to business owners, adjusters and insurance agents can provide everyone with up-to-date information when answering any questions, and employees of the company can use their experience and knowledge to assist in decision-making.

2. Expedite the Claims Process

When businesses have been damaged, it’s often important to begin the claims process as soon as possible. Starting the claims process quickly will allow the restoration process to start in a timely manner, which can ultimately save business owners time and money. Overall, working with a restoration company with 24-hour availability can dramatically improve the speed at which the claims process occurs.

3. Peace of Mind

The process of restoring a commercial property is often stressful. It’s common for business owners to feel overwhelmed by everything restoration entails. If a major issue arises and insurance agents or business owners are not able to get in touch with the restoration company, an already stressful situation can become more difficult. Knowing that you can contact a restoration company that is always open can offer immense peace of mind.

The right restoration company can make the process of restoring a business much simpler. Employing a restoration business that has 24-hour availability can allow insurance agents, adjusters and business owners to receive a quick response to any questions, can quicken the claims process and can offer peace of mind for everyone involved.

What is mold?

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

Molds are a form of fungus. There are many different types, and they can occur both indoors and outdoors.

Molds produce spores, which spread by floating around in the air. Mold spores are present in all indoor environments. There is no way to prevent spores, and they can persist in conditions where mold itself cannot grow.

Mold spores thrive in environments that are moist and warm, so when they land on a damp spot, they begin to grow.

Molds can grow on a variety of different surfaces, including fabric, paper, wood, glass, and plastic. As they grow, they may digest the material they are growing on.

What to do after a water damage

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

Do:

  • Shut off the source of water if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building, when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock.
  • Remove as much exess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Remove to a safe, dry place any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture.
  • Use wooden clothespins to keep furniture skirting off damp floors.
  • Hang draperies with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet carpeting or floors.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.

Don't

  • Leave Oriental rugs or any other rugs on the floor on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.
  • Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water, possibly causing electrical shock to yourself or damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, and especially not on wet concrete flooring.
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Flooding during a storm

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

Flooding During Storm

Storms can cause a lot of problems for homeowners. Rain water tends to find its way into basements and crawlspaces of homes in the area.

When flood water enters a basement it is usually through a window or basement entrance. Both have drainage but during a storm the drains can be clogged or filled. The malfunction allows the water to get into the home causing damage to the carpet, drywall, and contents.

When water enters a crawlspace it does damage to the subfloors and electrical or HVAC system. Crawlspaces are notorious for growing mold after a water intrusion.

At SERVPRO of Warren County, we make sure to clean your home after flooding. Call us 24/7 for emergency mitigation and restoration services at (513) 932-3649

When water damage Strikes call SERVPRO

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

It’s spring time and that means mud season. Fun for the kids but not so much for the parents. The kids can track mud all over the floor. But even more worrisome is the fact that water can gather and cause your basement to flood. Not just because of the rain, but also be on the lookout for when the snow melts around your house.

When your basement does flood make sure to do the following

  • Elevate objects that are on the ground to ensure they do not become ruined from the moisture
  • If your basement has a drain, keep an eye on it to make sure it does not become clogged with bits of dirt
  • If there is no visible accumulation on the surface, chances are it has been clogged, a drain snake can unclog the pipe

Make sure to contact us as soon as possible to ensure no further damage will be dealt to your household. Call SERVPRO of Warren County at (513) 932-3649

Smoke alarm

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half. The National fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detector requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps", the battery is low and should be replaces right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Mold on drywall

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

Drywall is one of the most common places for mold to grow, due to its high quantity of cellulose, which creates a great living environment for mold.

Most of the time when we are called, mold is visible. When mold grows, we tend to believe it's due to a lack of cleanliness or, at least, a lack of awareness. But it’s perfectly normal to have situations where water damage can be so subtle we only find out about it when the damage is severe. If the damage is too severe then we will remove the drywall, because once mold grows bad enough in drywall it cannot be repaired. We are also able to clear the remaining moisture out of the air.

Sometimes things are out of our control, even in our safest place to be. That’s why SERVPRO of Warren County spreads what we know about possible dangers in the home, to protect you and your family. If you’re ever in need of restoration for water, fire, mold, or storm damage, give us a call. Let’s keep your house safe.

The cost of services

10/5/2020 (Permalink)

The cost of service from SERVPRO is dependent on the type and extent of the damage to your property. Our goal is to restore, not replace.

SERVPRO costs are dependent on the type and extent of the damage sustained to a property.  The cost of restoration is typically less than replacement.

The cost of restoration services is almost always the first question we receive.  It’s an understandable question, and we’re always happy to provide an estimate.  Let’s review some of the criteria we use to get the information we need to give our customers the answer they need.

Should I File an Insurance Claim?

When we get this question, we always ask our clients what their deductible is.

Your insurance deductible may guide your decision about whether or not to file an insurance claim.  An insurance deductible is the amount of money you agree to pay for the project yourself.  This amount is different for everyone.  To learn what your deductible is, look at your insurance policy or ask your insurance company.

If it looks like the cost of the restoration project may be below your deductible, then ask for an estimate.  Many of our clients choose not to file a claim if the cost is below their deductible.

If the restoration project is large, most of our clients choose to file an insurance claim.  This situation is usually true for:

If you do end up filing an insurance claim, your deductible will be paid directly to the damage restoration company you choose.  All other expenses that are covered under your claim will be taken care of by your insurance company.

SERVPRO Has Agreements with Many Major Insurance Companies

Filing for an insurance claim can get complicated, and that’s why assign a Project Coordinator to each of our clients.  This person will:

  • Guide you throughout the restoration process, from start to finish.
  • Work with your insurance adjuster on a daily basis to update them on the work being done on your property.
  • Tell your insurance company what services your property needs to get back to preloss condition and ask if they are covered.  If we get the go-ahead from your adjuster, then we start or continue to work on your property.

As a SERVPRO  with over 30 years of experience, we have processed thousands of insurance claims.  Our team is knowledgeable about the insurance process, and we will help you get your claim processed.

As a nationwide company, SERVPRO has many agreements with major insurance companies.  This means that we all utilize an industry-wide price list that both we and the insurance companies have agreed to.  All of our pricing comes from this price list.

Our franchise accepts all insurance claims.

What if I Pay Myself or Something Isn’t Covered by My Insurance?

If you are paying for the restoration project yourself, then we are not bound by the price list agreement we have with insurance companies.  We can only on rare instances maybe help out with a self-pay job.

Restoration (Not Replacement) is the Goal

Our goal is always to save as much of your property and items as possible.

Damage restoration companies are typically preferred over demolition and new construction because restoration is:

  • Less Expensive - this results in lower claims costs
  • Faster - decrease your stress and return to normal faster

Some items are also irreplaceable.  We have helped save cherished family heirlooms and other personally important items for our clients like childhood blankets and stuffed animals, wedding dresses, and much more.

When a property has received extensive damage and demolition is necessary, our repairs and reconstruction division will take over.

Fire and soot damage

What to Do Until We Arrive During a Fire Damage

A fire can be devastating. It leaves behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Fire damages can affect ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until your local SERVPRO of Warren County. The following tips may help reduce damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork. n Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer/ refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor
  • Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/ bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system

Call SERVPRO of Warren  County at (513) 858-1071, if you've had a fire or would like to know how we can help in the event you do.

Smoke alarms

9/23/2020 (Permalink)

Every year in the United States, about 2000 people die in residential fires.  A smoke alarm stands guard around the clock, and when it first senses smoke, it sounds an alarm.  This often allows a family the precious, but limited, time to escape.  About 2/3 of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working alarms.

Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, outside sleeping areas, and inside bedrooms.  In general, alarms should be placed in the center of a ceiling or, if you place them on a wall, they should be near the ceiling.

There are 2 types of smoke alarms:

Ionization - these alarms are more responsive to flaming fires.  They use "ions" or electrically charged particles, to help detect smoke in the air.

Photoelectric - these alarms are more responsive to smoke or smoldering fires.  They use a light beam to help detect the presence of smoke.

Whichever type of smoke alarm that you choose, it's imperative that you change the batteries twice a year and test them every month.

Mixing bleach with other products may cause serious health problems especially when mixed with ammonia, vinegar, or any other acid type cleaning material. Bleach can be toxic to every living being and our environment.

Water damage

9/13/2020 (Permalink)

Water intrusion in a home or business is a traumatic event. Effectively restoring a water-damaged building and its contents is a valuable service to a homeowner or business owner, as well as to the insurance industry. In residential homes, the normal lifestyle of residents is severely disrupted.

This type of disruption creates stress and uncertainty for many individuals. In commercial properties, business interruption can be devastating and costly. A professional water restorer can provide guidance and assistance to help business owners make the best decisions through these difficult times. These are just some of the factors that drive SERVPRO to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Often in a water damage project, only a portion of a building was impacted. To dry the wet areas most efficiently, drying zones are established within the building. A drying zone is an area where you control the humidity, airflow, and temperature to speed the drying of wet materials that can be salvaged.

Water cleanup

9/13/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage is definitely on a spectrum. A spectrum of the high and low. It could be that your refrigerator is leaking and you received a small puddle on your floor. It could also be that your shower pan has had a small leak for years causing it to seep through the material into your floor causing rot and mold. Neither is to blame yourself for. I would just pay attention to the smaller details especially when it is dealing with water. An excess of water being left for over 24 hours is subject to start growing mold on the material that was in contact with said water. Water damage is easier to handle than water and mold combined.

Call us today for any needs! We are here for you 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro CAN:

1. Proactive Cleaning:  fogging and wiping down common touch areas

2. Suspected or confirmed cases:  fogging and detail clean

Sanitizing versus Disinfecting

Sanitizing – reduces but does not necessarily eliminate all the bacteria on a treated surface. Sanitizers do not have claims for viruses or fungi. To be a registered sanitizer, the test results for a product must show a reduction of at least a 99.9% in the number of each type of bacteria tested on non-food-contact surfaces. Examples of non-food-contact sanitizers include carpet sanitizers, air sanitizers, laundry additives, and in-tank toilet bowl sanitizers.

Disinfecting – works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs. Disinfecting destroys or irreversibly inactivates infectious or other undesirable microbes, but not necessarily the spores of bacteria and fungi. The number of microbes killed during a disinfecting process will vary, depending on the specific chemical and how it is used.

SERVPRO Industries, LLC has been dealing with biological hazards such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi for over 50 years.

Now is an opportune time to have SERVPRO of Middletown/Springboro conduct Proactive Cleaning services while facilities are unoccupied. This scenario allows our laborers to efficiently and effectively; build containment areas, gear up with appropriate PPE, and do what we do best – CLEAN!

Water damage in your home

3/2/2020 (Permalink)

Having a water damage in your home or business can be very stressful. We realize that on top of losing your possessions and having to potentially reconstruct your property, the equipment is noisy and can become bothersome if you remain in your home during the restoration process. When you call SERVPRO of Warren County to help restore your property after suffering a water damage, our professional technicians will place the appropriate equipment to dry out the area as quickly as possible. It is VERY important to follow our instructions and keep the equipment running at all times. Turning off the air movers and/or dehumidifiers can delay the drying time and can cause further damage to your property such as mold growth. It is also important to note that typically your insurance coverage will only pay for the drying equipment for a specific length of time and needs adjuster approval beyond that time frame. Our highly trained and certified technicians monitor the moisture readings and the equipment daily to determine the appropriate time for removal. If you have any concerns or questions about the drying equipment, be sure to speak to any of our crew members.

SERVPRO of Warren County hours of operation is 24/365.

Water damage in your home/residence

2/28/2020 (Permalink)

Approximately 98% of basements will experience water damage in their lifetime. The inevitability isn’t too surprising considering basements are underground and therefore prone to things like gravity and the consequences of whatever happens in the home above. Considering this statistic, it’s safe to say that understanding the processes of both the water damage itself and the restoration required to fix it is genuinely useful for homeowners.

Here’s what you don’t know about water damage.

First off, water damage insurance and flood insurance are different. If you live in an area not prone to floods, you don’t need to get flood insurance just to protect your home from water damage. They’re different insurance types entirely. In addition, not all water damage is actually insured. For instance, water damage related to neglection of the property may not be covered the way a sudden disaster’s effects would be. Once water damage has impacted the home, in any area, call insurance immediately. The sooner the better since they need the complete details in order to determine the cause, the damage, and therefore pay the restoration company. If you find dealing with insurance a pain, no worries. Restoration companies like, for example, SERVPRO of Warren County can help you with insurance in addition to repairing the site of the water damage.

Once insurance is dealt with, there’s a few other things to consider. Some water damage, depending on the source, can be polluted and dangerous to be in or around. It is not recommended to explore the damage personally, especially if it’s a large quantity of water and in a location like the basement. In addition, the moment the water damage happens it is getting worse and worse every minute. That is why there is a sense of urgency that comes with water damage. More than the water, the dangers of water damage come with water the water causes. This includes mold growth, structural damage, destruction of personal items. The sooner the area of damage can be dried and restored, the better off the home is. The same way you wouldn’t avoid going to the doctor if a sudden pain erupted in your body, your home needs similar urgency to keep its integrity and continue to serve you and your family in a safe way.

In case of a water damage emergency, consider SERVPRO of Warren County. They can assist you with your insurance, and be there that day, and use the most powerful possible equipment to return your home to normal in no time.

Mold

10/17/2019 (Permalink)

Climate is a perfect environment for mold.  Over growth of indoor mold can occur for many reasons, the most typical setting we find an over growth of mold is in homes that have been unoccupied for a length of time.  The main reason for this is because of the lack of air movement in the home. When a home or business owner’s leave their property it is usually left lock up, window closed tight, and AC turned off. With our humid and moderate temperatures here in Hawaii a home without air movement can be a mold haven, a perfect place for it to grow undisturbed.

Mold is present in almost every environment, indoor and outdoor. It isn't of much concern until the spore count ie, how much mold is present, reaches an unhealthy level. This is when health issues can arise. Mold is not only a health concern but it can also cause rot to occur on the surface it is growing on. This can weaken framing or cabinetry and decay sheet rock and flooring.

If you find your home is in need of help due to an over growth of mold don't hesitate to call on SERVPRO of Warren County we are always here to help.

Disaster

10/16/2019 (Permalink)

There's nothing like when a good plan comes together. One of the best plans someone can make is to plan for disasters.

Ask yourself these questions: What will I do if there's a fire at my home or work? What if there's an extended power outage? If my family aren't together, how will we regroup? Am I prepared to evacuate and leave?

Your answer to those questions might say whether you need a plan or not. What's the first step?

Have a conversation with your family, make a plan, and practice it. Follow alerts on social media/TV from emergency & weather responders.

We never know when a disaster will happen, being prepared will help reinforce our families safety. And as always give us a call for any water, fire, or mold damages.

mold

Depends on the Damage Source

Some policies cover mold caused by certain water sources. For example, sudden catastrophes, such as burst pipes or sewer backups, are more likely to be covered than lingering maintenance issues. However, fast action to mitigate the water damage is needed not to break your part of the agreement with your insurer. SERVPRO can respond quickly to any water or mold issue. There are policies that put a small limit on the liability to repair, usually only about $5 to 20 thousand dollars. This may be just a drop in the bucket for the actual cost of a mold remediation project.

Your mold coverage likely will not include the following sources of water damage:

Continuous faucet leaks, ignored by the homeowner
Drainage problems in the yard, exterior issue
Condensation buildup from lack of proper ventilation
Flood waters

Commercial insurance

10/11/2019 (Permalink)

Water is a lot more damaging than most people give it credit for, and even a minor leak can turn into a costly and time-consuming property issue. When it affects a business, water can destroy important documents, expensive equipment and office furniture, not to mention the building itself. For this reason, business owners should invest in a sound business policy that covers perils such as water damage.

What To Look for in Your Commercial Insurance Policy

Most commercial insurance policies for water loss cover damages caused by burst or broken pipes and gradual leaks. Unfortunately, many policies contain exclusions, which you want to be aware of so that you can ensure you are covered for the appropriate risks. Some exclusions to look out for include the following:

  • Concurrent causation
  • Floods
  • Backup of sewer and drains
  • Water damage from storms

Unfortunately, many business insurance policies require business owners to carry a ride-on, that a lot don’t think about adding

Fire process

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Understanding the Fire Damage Restoration Process

After a fire tragedy such as an electrical fire or a utility room fire, there is a lot of confusion among the afflicted parties, and it is hard to figure out what to expect. In such a situation, only a professional commercial fire damage expert can ensure that the occupants of the building get back to their normal lives as soon as possible. More importantly, it is crucial for every afflicted party to begin the process. Most people take too long to begin the fire restoration after the fire truck has left the premises only for soot damage to take a toll on the building and its contents after firefighters have completed the fire suppression process.

Emergency Fire Damage Contacts

Any company understands that the longer it takes to begin the fire restoration process, the harder it becomes to remove soot damage as well as smoke damage. Most commercial building managers only have the emergency contacts for a firetruck. Commercial fire damage experts and companies have emergency contacts, and they operate 24/7. They are prompt in their response, and it is vital that property owners and managers save their contacts.

Board up

10/3/2019 (Permalink)

Here are four reasons to board-up after a fire!

  • In a commercial setting, there may still be viable stock on/in the premises. If products that appear viable remain in the building, you should consider boarding up. These items may require assessment, cleaning and may not be fit for sale, but having them properly processed rather than stolen can be helpful for insurance purposes later on.
  • You want to protect electronics and other valuables. Depending on the extent of the fire damage, you may be able to restore some electronics or other valuable property to working condition.
  • You need to keep out the elements. If the structure of your property has extensive damage, you should try to keep the elements out to prevent additional damage. Exposure to additional water, wind, or sunlight can compound the damage caused by smoke residue and soot.
  • You want to limit soot damage as well. It is generally a good idea to reduce foot traffic on the scene of a recent fire. When soot gets embedded into carpeting or upholstery, it can be much more difficult to restore these materials and it’s typically more costly to replace as opposed to restoring.

Smoke can spread throughout an entire structure under a couple of minutes. ERP (Emergency Ready Profile)

9/18/2019 (Permalink)

What is an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and why does my business need one?  Having an ERP will greatly expedite any remediation work your building(s) will need in times of emergency. Getting to problems quickly and knowing the intricacies of the building will save time and mitigate damage.

An ERP plan provides both the building owner, property manager, and the SERVPRO team with the information each needs to expedite emergency services. With an ERP, your SERVPRO team has a building diagram on file which notes water shut-off valves, electrical panels, access points of entry and exit, locations of kitchen areas, bathrooms, office or apartment floor diagrams, what materials are in the building such as tile, carpet, drywall, acoustical ceiling tiles, etc. This knowledge allows for quick and efficient access and action when responding to emergency situations.  Also included in the ERP are names and contact information for both SERVPRO professionals as well as the building managers/owners. All parties are therefore not scrambling to locate the right person or find the correct phone number or email.  This information pertaining to key personnel on both sides is provided.

With storm season here and winter approaching, it's time to contact your local SERVPRO franchise to establish your ERP today.  It's free, easy to establish, and worth the peace of mind.

Containment

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Warren County, we know that business goes on even when there is a problem.  Every minute down is dollars lost.  We do our best to optimize that experience when we are on site.

Here is an example of containment being set - when we seal off areas undergoing work from other areas in use by company employees so there is no transfer of dust, mist or spores.

We have a variety of barriers and drop walls that we install and seal, and in certain situations like mold will use pressure so that contaminants don't transfer out of the affected areas.

We are skilled and experienced in these procedures and have many satisfied clients who were able to maintain daily operations even as we were on site for them.  Call us to inquire.

Mold

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

In as little as 48 hours, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business when there's a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line. Mold can cause health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property. SERVPRO of Warren County has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem.

Mold spores

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is microscopic which cannot be seen with the naked eye. Therefore, it is very hard to determine if your home has mold unless you can visibly see the  growth. Mold needs water to grow, and a food source and will grow if there are leaks, of course if there is mold spore.

Hidden mold can be found by doing some simple sleuthing:

  • Where do you have water problems?
  • Check under windows since condensation can form and mold will grow on the sill.
  • Bathrooms have a lot of water. Any leak or corner that collects moisture is a potential place for mold growth.
  • The water heater and water softener are notorious for having leaks, especially when the water softener purges.
  • You can often find mold around the edges of their tanks.

Sump pump failure

9/5/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of East Hamilton Fairfield recently got called to a home where the sump pump had failed and the customer had four inches of standing water in his basement. When SERVPRO of arrived on site there was no longer four inches of standing water but there was still a good amount of water throughout the basement. SERVPRO performed the necessary actions to remove the water and moisture from the basement using extraction methods, fans and dehumidifiers. When the dry out was finished our repair division replaced all the damaged drywall.

In some cases your home owners insurance may not cover sump pump overflows. This is a good reminder to take a look at your home insurance policy to make sure you have coverage for sump pump failure. Sump pump fails are very common and you might want to make sure it is included in your home insurance policy. This slight increase in your monthly insurance cost could save you thousands of dollars in the future.

Insurance policy

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

When one thinks of a water damage incident they may not think of it in a context of their own home, if they even think about it at all. SERVPRO of Warren County sees water damages happen every day and at different times of the day. Reviewing and speaking with your homeowner’s insurance company or agent can be helpful. An extension of that would be to read your policy in detail and ask your agent to go over or explain some of its content and be sure everything you have is covered. Sewer back up if an often over looked item in policies. If you are a renter and not a homeowner you should still have a contents insurance policy. Learn where the water shut off valve is in your home to help avoid damage any further. Knowing where that is can be helpful in the event of a water damage, whether it’s a busted pipe or a simple refrigerator line.

Water damage from washing machine

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

A leaking washing machine can cause substantial water damage to your home.  When a leak occurs, the water will flow out of your machine or it's hose until you discover the mess. The flooding can cause damage to wood floors, walls, furniture and even through the ceiling to the floors below.  There are preventative steps homeowners can take to reduce their risk of an appliance leak.

  1. Make sure your hoses aren't kinked. There should be at least 4 inches between the wall and your washing machine.
  2. Check your detergent. Too much of it or the wrong kind (in high efficiency machines) can clog the overflow tube and cause a leak.
  3. Inspect to see that the drain hose is properly inserted into the drain line - it can become loose during machine use.
  4. Check your supply line hoses to make sure they aren't brittle or cracked. We recommend using stainless steel braided hoses to avoid deterioration.
  5. If your washing machine is in a high risk area consider installing a  washing machine leak detector with an alarm that alerts you if it detects water on the floor. It will also close the valves so that flooding doesn’t continue.
  6. Turn off your washing machine water supply at the lever whenever you leave home for an extended period.

Fast response to a water damage

9/3/2019 (Permalink)

The area in a home or business that is most at risk of being flooded is the basement. A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are inherently prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of a building and are normally built partly or entirely below ground level. There are a number of reasons why your basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain causes surface water to pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Sanitary sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

Fire and smoke damage

7/26/2019 (Permalink)

When fires occurs, in both residential homes and business, it’s not just the cleaning up of the structural areas that we need to be concerned with.

Our crews have to be so careful with the homeowner’s personal belongings because the insurance companies need very specific documentation in order to appropriately compensate the insured so they they have money to replace all of the damaged items. The fallen debris must be sifted through prior to bagging for disposal so that any contents, which may be very small items, can be separated for further valuation.

SERVPRO of Warren County’s team members need to be very aware of properly bagging and separating customers content, so taking our time in small spaces with lots of contents is a very important part of the clean-up process after a smoke damage after a fire.

Fire/smoke damage

7/25/2019 (Permalink)

Cleaning smoke stains off walls and ceilings can be a difficult task. Even if the fire was small like a cooking fire, the smoke can quickly discolor your ceilings and walls. Since smoke rises, the smoke usually damages your ceilings first as the smoke spreads across the ceiling leaving smoke residue. While smoke can usually be cleaned easily off metal and smooth surfaces like counters and ovens, ceilings and walls are not so easy to clean, specially if you have very high ceilings.

While we all hope we never have to suffer through the experience of a house fire, it is important to know what to do if one should happen. Obviously, the first thing you should do is ensure the fire has been extinguished completely.

This can be done by someone in the home if the fire is small and can be put out easily and safely. Or by the fire department if the fire is too big and dangerous to safely extinguish by the homeowner. It’s important to note that it’s always best to call the fire department right as soon as a fire is spotted and to get everyone out of the home quickly and safely.

Water damage in your home or business

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Aside from a fire, water damage is possibly the fastest acting damage to your  home. Flooding, rain, leaking (busted) pipes, or broken appliances are all possible sources. A whole in your home's foundation that allows humid, moisture-filled air can also cause water damage. Moisture in large amounts leads to condensation, causing water pooling and damage.

Once water is present it is likely to quickly take action against any porous materials, depending on the kind of water and length it is sitting. Even material that are not quite as porous but still allow for sitting water, will feel the affects. Mold, rotting, or destroyed material are all potential consequences of water intruding into your home if you don’t take action.

SERVPRO of Warren County is available 24/7 for any damages, you can call our office at (513) 932-3649.

The new location will allow your contents to be kept safe in our warehouse and to be restored if needed.

Tornado storm damage

5/29/2019 (Permalink)

Severe storms and tornadoes hit the Dayton and surrounding areas in Ohio Monday night, leaving many in the area without power, access to drinkable water or safe shelter or vehicles.

Dayton and nearby communities are still searching for potential victims after intense storms came through. Suspected tornadoes also left behind destruction in the Indiana town of Pendleton, about 100 miles west of Dayton. Dayton is currently under a boil-water advisory (with no electric).

Several areas of Dayton were hit hard, along with nearby areas of Troy, Beavercreek, Xenia and West Milton. In addition to trees and power lines, the tornadoes peeled roofs off of houses, brought down businesses' walls and collapsed ceilings as well as car ports.

Act before a flood

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

When a flood hits your home, there is not much time to collect yourself, let alone start to mitigate damages.  However, if you can manage to get things in motion quickly, you may be able to reduce expenses and repair times associated with flood damage to your residence or business.  Here are a few things to try to act on after a damage.

Get Things Higher Up Before a flash flood - You may want to spend some time in the hours before it hits moving your belongings to higher ground.  Floods don't often reach higher than a few feet in the home, and you should be able to keep most of your belongings safe by taking them to higher floors or placing them on counter-tops and secure tables.  Be careful not to place too much trust in a table, however, as it may buckle or overturn as floodwaters overtake it.

SERVPRO of Warren County is quick to respond in any kind of disaster. We are emergency services and available 24/7 365

Got mold?

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

There is only a couple ways to remove mold, and there is a ton of ways not to remove mold correctly. A lot of things people use to remove mold is bleach, which is something you absolutely do not use at all, it actually feeds the mold and helps it grow. There is a process to remove mold that involves a lot of safety precautions not only for your health but also to keep it from spreading and cross contaminating other content or building materials.

If you experience a water damage be sure to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Warren County so we can get it dried to avoid any microbial growth. We are available to help 24/7 365 days a year. Don’t hesitate to call to schedule an appointment at (513)932-3649.

Mold remediation

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

There are thousands of different kinds of molds. A lot of times if you suspect mold in your house you may want to get a mold test. However a mold test isn’t really necessary if mold is visible. The first thing we would want to do is figure why mold is growing and creating mold colonies. Mold needs three things to stay dormant and survive, which is a mold spore, moisture, and a food source. The food source can be anything from dry wall dust, insulation etc...etc... Once the source has been fixed that caused the mold we can remediate it. SERVPRO of Warren County professionals are available 24/7 365. If you have any questions or concerns on mold you can call our office at (513)422-9200.

Storm damage

2/25/2019 (Permalink)

With windy conditions roofs can get damaged, gutters can detatched. If it’s raining and roofs get damaged we have experts that can get your roof tarped to avoid water damage or further water damage you may have experienced. A lot of times you won’t realize you have any damage until you start to see water spots on your ceilings or walls. Or even a few days later there may even be some microbial growth growing. Usually with microbial growth that was  caused from storm damage and water coming in, the dry wall most likely would have to be cut out if it’s been siting for a few days.

If you experience any damage you can call our office at (513) 422-9200.

We offer Biohazard cleanup

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Biohazardous Clean Ups By SERVPRO of Warren County Means Good Results

A biohazard spill often involves some type of bodily fluid. In private homes, this usually means a blood spill. There are certain risks when it comes to restoring a home after an incident with blood happens, and they need to seriously considered before cleanup efforts begin.

Residents should not attempt to clean up a blood spill in their home. Even without the emotional component, there is the risk of disease and other pathogens in even a small amount of blood. SERVPRO of Warren County understands both elements and how to deal with them when developing a restoration plan.

Cleaning and removing blood and blood stains require chemical cleaners designed to neutralize the pathogens in them. Infectious diseases found in blood spills and splatters include Hepatitis A, B, and C, as well as HIV and many others. To ensure we do this properly, our technicians utilize anti-bacterial cleaners we keep on-hand.

The anti-bacterial cleaners are necessary since blood does not respond to conventional cleaners like dirt or soot. Conventional agents do not always clean blood completely and even when they do, there is often, a stain remaining at the spill point. Leaving a visible mark is not something we accept; if we cannot remove the entire mark, our technicians can repaint the affected area or remove the stained structural property.

Restoring your home after any disaster is difficult. Cleaning up a blood spill is one of the more difficult tasks we face, but SERVPRO of Warren County is here to help. We want to return your home to its original state so that you can move forward when the time is right for you. Call us today at. Call (513)932-3649 to schedule an inspection and get started.

Clean air equals healither employees

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

If you think the air you breathe indoors is cleaner than what’s outside, think again. The EPA estimates indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. All that bad air translates into everything from frequent colds and sore throats to headaches, asthma, allergies and chronic fatigue, which in turn causes employee downtime.

When dust and debris and other contaminants build up in your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, they can trigger allergies and other health problems. But they also reduce energy efficiency, which increases your energy costs. Now you have two compelling reasons to make sure the air ducts and HVAC system in your workplace are running efficiently.

If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating one or more of the following:

Dust

Pollen

Odors

Dirt and debris

Other contaminants

SERVPRO of Warren County Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

Water damage in your business

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

Having the right know how to address water damage in commercial buildings is a trade mark of SERVPRO technicians. We also have the drying equipment to tackle any size water damage. We work closely with Property Mangers, Insurance Adjusters, and Consultants to handle jobs in a timely and professional manner.

Here are some facts about water damage and our services.

Drying: The process of removing moisture from materials.

Dehumidification: The process of removing moisture from the air.

Water can hide behind walls, under flooring, or in your HVAC system and vents. At SERVPRO of Warren County we provide expert drying and dehumidification services using a combination of the latest Revolution dehumidifiers and high velocity air movers to remove moisture from the air. With so much at stake, we will make sure your business gets back to normal fast.

Ways to keep toilet from overflowing

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

1. Put Up Signs

Posting basic rules for waste disposal near toilets can reduce the frequency of clogs and flooded toilets in a property. Recommend occupants and guests dispose of all feminine hygiene and paper products other than toilet paper in trash cans or containers and place these receptacles in convenient locations.

2. Provide Alternative Disposal Containers

It is a good idea to supply every stall in a women's bathroom with some type of bin to offer a convenient disposal alternative to flushing. By making the disposal of products that should not be flushed easier and more discreet, you can prevent clogs and backups before they start.

3. Order Thinner Toilet Paper

Single-ply paper is less likely to cause a clogged toilet than thicker toilet paper. Even if a building occupant or guest flushes a large wad of thinner paper, it is less likely to cause an overflow than two-ply or cushioned paper or wipes. You may also want to consider a toilet paper dispenser that restricts the amount of paper that can be rolled out at a time.

These three steps can reduce the likelihood, or at least the frequency, with which toilets flood a commercial property. If your property does suffer water or sewage damage as a result of a clogged toilet or toilet overflow, contact a plumber to eliminate the clog and SERVPRO of Warren Counties expertise and equipment to repair these types of water damage.

Purpose of a flood cut

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

After a storm rages it is likely that your home will experience a bit of flooding. When this happens, you will probably hear the water professionals from SERVPRO you hire talk about making a flood cut. A flood cut is a mark that is made 12 inches above the spot where the water damage stops. Specialists tear out everything below the flood cut to stop the spread of contamination and prevent mold growth. Here are some common questions about this process.

1. What Circumstances Require a Flood Cut?

Any time there is damage that cannot be dried with a fan, professionals are probably going to use a flood cut to be on the safe side. Insulation cannot be dried, so if there is wet insulation, the wall has to be cut out and the insulation removed. If the water is contaminated by storm-related debris or sewage, the wall must be discarded. If tests show any harmful microbes, the affected area must go.

2. Why Does the Flood Cut Have To Be a Foot Above the Damage?

Water damage from flooding does not like to stay politely in its place. What technicians can see with the naked eye may only be the beginning of the story. Placing the flood cut 12 inches above the visible water damage ensures that everything affected is remediated.

3. Is There Any Way To Save the Wall?

If the water damage is minimal and no insulation is affected, it is possible that quick removal of water and fast drying techniques can allow the wall to be salvaged. The water in question must also be clean. If it is contaminated at all, the wall has to be replaced.

Water removal

Extracting Water From Pipe Break

The next step after inspection is water cleanup, which is a major mitigation strategy after a supply line break or pipe break. This involves removing water from all the rooms in a flooded home using vacuums and pumps. The extent of the damage caused by water in home determines the type of equipment the restoration company will use. The water should be removed as soon as possible to avoid bacterial and mold growth. The water from a supply line break or pipe break should be contained and extracted immediately to prevent further damage in a flooded home.

It is advisable to remove all wet materials like toys, clothing, pillows, throw rugs, and carpets from the affected area before water cleanup. Our professionals can expedite drying by removing wet surfaces on floors, ceiling, and walls after water cleanup. Unsalvageable dry walls or insulations such as baseboards should be removed to accelerate drying. The other method that can be used to accelerate drying in a water cleanup process involves opening cabinet doors and drawers.

Preparing your roof and gutters for fall

10/9/2018 (Permalink)

As much fun as summer can be, it has to end at some point. As the trees begin to change and the weather shifts from hot and humid to cool and crisp, it’s time to prepare for the onset of cooler months. Whether you’re ready for hot cocoa and sweaters or are still holding on to ice cream and swim suits, there’s a lot to do to get ready for the changing seasons.

  1. Inspect your roof
If you have a heavy rainstorm or a foot of snow, does your roof have what it takes to handle that? Before settling in for another chilly fall and a freezing winter take a look at your roof for weak spots or cracks in your shingles and granules. If you see anything that looks off or unstable, a roofer may be what your home needs to weather this winter’s weather conditions.
  2. Clean out your gutters
As the leaves begin to turn, you know you’re only weeks away from them falling off entirely and stopping up your gutters and down spouts. Before you find yourself with a big mess on your hands, take the time now to clean out your gutters and drainpipes to prevent the possibility of water damage and clogs. A clean early in the season may not be sufficient through the winter, but it will make sure you’re prepared for the harsher weather to come. Water damages can be caused by clogged drains or overflowing water to collect on your roof.

Preparing your house for fall may not be what you planned to do during your weekend, but it’s something you’ll thank yourself for later when you don’t have to pay for repairs, most of the time even a covered claim will still have a deductible. With the right measures taken now, you will be prepared to settle in for the fall.

Fire and soot damage

You should make notes about what items are ruined or damaged and take photographs too. You’ll be contacting your insurance company and a restoration contractor, so you want to be sure about your circumstances. Misunderstandings are common, but if you have photos and notes, you’ll be in a better position to know the extent of the fire damage and what needs to be restored or replaced. This should be done within hours after the fire is extinguished.

Once you have a clear picture of the damage, call your insurance company. Hopefully, you can do this the next day. It is important to call them as soon as possible, so they will send an insurance adjustor to your home or office quickly.

Call a Reputable Fire Damage Restoration Contractor

When searching for a local cleaning and restoration contractor, make sure they are Institution of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) certified. These professionals have been trained in the latest restoration technology and have health and safety certification. They will have experience in a wide range of fire restoration projects. You should also ask for proof or the proper licenses and insurance.

SERVPRO of Warren County is a restoration contractor who also does reconstruction. This will save you a lot of time and money. They will first board up your home or office so vandals or thieves cannot enter. They will also work directly with your insurance company to create a restoration plan that will return your property to its pre-fire condition. They’ll inform your adjustor about the items that can be cleaned and restored and the ones that need to be replaced. Your restoration contractor should also be able to safely store some of your possessions during recovery.

Protecting your home/business from flooding

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage is no match for SERVPRO of Warren County restoration professionals.

Flooding can happen anywhere and if you live in Florida, you know even one of our heavy afternoon thunderstorms can ensure flooding can happen "any time" as well.

It's a scary thought to think that your home could be under water in a moments notice.

So we thought we would share a few tips that can help you stay flood free.

  1. Water flow - How does water flow around your house? It's important that it flows away from the structure. If it is noted that this is not the case, you may want to call an irrigation specialist to see if it is possible to correct get it fixed without spending a fortune.
  2. Water valves - Modify them. So many times in flooding cases we see sewage backup and overflow. That is the LAST thing you want to be dealing with, so it may be worth it to look at installing a back-flow valve.
  3. Lastly, in the event that you believe flooding is about to occur, move as many items as you can away from the rising water (electronics especially). Then give us a call, and we will be out there ASAP to help!

Pets are just as important as any family member to most people, so why would you not make them a part of your preparedness planning? There are several things you can do to make sure they stay safe as well during an emergency. Pet Emergency Kit Ready.gov/animals lists the below items as essential to building your Pet emergency kit.

  1. Food: At least a three-day supply in an airtight, waterproof container.
  2. Water: At least three days of water specifically for your pets.
  3. Medicines and medical records.
  4. Important documents that you may find helpful
  5. First aid kit: Cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Including a pet first aid reference book is a good idea as well.

7.Collar or harness with ID tag, rabies tag and a leash.

8.Crate or pet carrier: Have a sturdy, safe crate or carrier in case you need to evacuate. The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down.

  1. Sanitation: Pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach.
  2. A picture of you and your pet together: If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, and color.

Smoke and soot damage

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to smoke or fire damage restoration, fast action is important. Following the initial fire or smoke-related incident, smoke and soot will settle on surfaces creating additional damage to the structure and your contents.  Smoke contains a wide variety of chemicals and by products, many of them aggressive in nature.

Material in furniture and flooring is often synthetic and when burned, creates chemical reactions. After only a short period of time, items can go from cleanable to unsalvageable. The longer acid or corrosive gasses stay on at-risk surfaces, the worse pitting or etching becomes. Pre-cleaning methods neutralize the acid and protect metal and glass, marble, china, chrome and more. We have them expertise and chemicals to make a situation “Like it never even happened.”

Contact SERVPRO of Warren County at (513)932-3649 to learn more about our smoke and fire damage restoration. We are a 24 hour emergency services company.

Quick response is important

9/25/2018 (Permalink)

When a flood hits your home, there is not much time to collect yourself, let alone start to mitigate damages.  However, if you can manage to get things in motion quickly, you may be able to reduce expenses and repair times associated with flood damage to your residence.  When a flood hits, try your best to follow these points of advice to minimize property damage and headache in the ensuing days and weeks.

Get Things Higher Up Before the Storm - You may want to spend some time in the hours before it hits moving your belongings to higher ground.  Floods don't often reach higher than a few feet in the home, and you should be able to keep most of your belongings safe by taking them to higher floors or placing them on counter-tops and secure tables.  Be careful not to place too much trust in a table table, however, as it may buckle or overturn as floodwaters overtake it.

SERVPRO of Warren County is quick to respond in any kind of disaster. We are emergency services and open 24/7, call our office at (513)932-3649.

Mold in your commercial business

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

Nearly every commercial space can supply these requisites, but we have the trained technicians, appropriate tools, and effective products to remediate a mold outbreak and suggestions to help you avoid a repeat fungal performance.

Take mold damage in your business seriously, but do not panic. Danger of DIY after a fire damage

9/21/2018 (Permalink)

Homeowners Often Take on Unnecessary Risks to Cleanup Up Their Properties After a Fire Loss

One of the most troubling things about a disaster in your  home is the uncertainty of when your home can ever look or feel the same again. With a situation like a fire in your residence, you want to correct the effects of this incident as quickly as possible to ensure that you do not allow for the situation to get worse. The temptation is probably high to immediately start to dry and clean or restore your damaged home on your own; there are many concerns that you should know.

As much as you want to save money and do things yourself, your hoke offers requires a professional restoration company.  There are too many variables and threats that exist within the house that the average homeowner is ill-prepared to face. Our SERVPRO of Warren County team of professionals can respond quickly and help to mitigate further damages while we prepare a plan to restore your home.

One of the most significant risks that a homeowner faces, once their home is affected by fire damages, is environmental exposure. With dirt, debris, soot, and smoke circulating throughout the air in the affected areas of your house, these contaminants to the atmosphere can lead to illness or breathing concerns for an individual without the appropriate protective equipment. Our technicians have the safety gear to prevent exposure in hazardous areas such as full-face respirators.

Another potential concern for the homeowner after a fire has gotten extinguished is a weakening of structural components and construction materials. It is not at all uncommon for ceilings to collapse, floors to give way, or walls to fall over. This risk is one that our SERVPRO of Warren County professionals assume as we seek to begin the restoration process, but not one that you should.

As tempting as it might be to save yourself the cost of restoration, most homeowners would find that to restore their home to their insurance company’s standards correctly and safely, they need professional and experienced specialists. Our SERVPRO of Warren County team is available 24/7 by calling (513)932-3649

Different types of fire damage require different cleaning methods, and it is the work of our SERVPRO technicians to determine the most appropriate way of cleaning. The initial cleaning can be enough for some situations, while in others, we may advise you to do some refinishing and repainting.

After cleaning the various areas and contents, it is time to conduct deodorization. The process aims at getting rid of the unpleasant odors that are left behind after a fire. In most cases, identifying the sources of these smells is a difficult task since some of them may be coming from hard to access areas like cracks. We have the right tools that spray deodorizers into those spaces and neutralize the odor sources.

When it is not possible to conduct the restoration when your contents are still in place, we may recommend a move-out. Such is necessary when our SERVPRO team analyzes the situation and finds out the materials can accrue more loss if we do not relocate them to another area. During the move-out, it is our job to do the inventory together with any detailed cleaning and deodorization.

At SERVPRO of Warren County, We’re Faster To Any Size of mold, water, storm, and fire damaging incidents. Call us today at (513)932-3649 and be served by an industry leader.

Grill safety

8/21/2018 (Permalink)

There is nothing better than grilling out in the summertime or a nice fall day. Everyone love’s to see fire in the grill, under hot dogs and burgers at any outdoor party or family cookout. However, if a grill is not managed properly, an unwelcomed fire can turn your family cookout into a catastrophe. Here are some tips for keeping everyone at the party safe while grilling out:

General Grilling Tips

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors and preferable off of wooden decks.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the house, deck railings and out from under leaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

If you have any questions or need help call SERVPRO of Warren County at (513)932-3649.

Smoke detectors

8/21/2018 (Permalink)

Test smoke alarms monthly using the test button. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries need the entire smoke alarm unit replaced every ten years or sooner . Other alarms need batteries replaced every year at least, and the unit replaced every ten years. If the alarm chirps signaling low battery(yes that annoying chirp that a lot of us listen to for months before changing), take the proper steps to replace the unit or the batteries immediately. Never disable or remove the battery from an alarm. Almost half of fires where smoke alarms were present but did not activate had missing or disconnected batteries. If you need help installing, testing or changing batteries in your smoke alarms, contact your local fire department, an electrician or the American Red Cross. Be sure your home has a fire emergency plan in place and conduct regular fire drills with your family.

Water tips

7/17/2018 (Permalink)

Here are 10 helpful hints to help avoid damage to your home or place of business…

  1. Do not leave electronics on the floor. This includes, IPads, computers, DVD players, etc.
  2. Leave a 3 to 4 inch gap between the back of the washing machine and the wall to avoid kinking the hose near the valve connection. Replace your washing machine hose every 5 years.
  3. Pay attention to your water bill. A significant increase could indicate a leak.
  4. Make sure each resident in your home or place of business knows where the main shut-off is located.
  5. Have a professional roof inspection annually.
  6. Inspect your plumbing pipes on an annual basis for condensation or obvious leaks or corrosion.
  7. After flushing the toilet, remain in the area until the fill valve has finished refilling.
  8. Make sure your downspouts are directed 5 to 10 feet away from your house. Clean all build up of debris from downspouts monthly.
  9. Chemical drain cleaners can eat away at your pipes. Use a drain snake first. This is suggested every 3-4 months depending on the size of your household.
  10. Flush your hot water heater every 6 months to remove sediment. You can call in a licensed plumber to assist.

  • Never try to relight fireworks that appear to be duds. Wait up to 20 minutes for a possible delayed ignition. Then if nothing happens, soak the firework in a bucket of water and dispose of it.
  • Dispose of all firework materials by first soaking them in water before putting them in the trash.
  • Keep sparklers away from clothing and other flammable materials.

We hope everyone has a fun and SAFE 4th of July!!

Fire Hazards

7/4/2018 (Permalink)

Below are the most common Fire Hazards in your home.

  • Alcohol and Fire

It's a fact that many house fires are caused by someone attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol.

  • Candles

Candle fires happen in places like bedrooms and bathrooms where people use them as mood enhancers. Unfortunately, people can fall asleep with a candle still burning or leave the room without snuffing out the flame. Candles should NEVER be left burning unattended!

  • Cooking

Many items in the kitchen can catch fire easily including pot holders, dish towels, and product packaging. Keep curtains away from the stove and clean up all spills on the stove top or near by counters.

  • Electrical

Unsafe use of electricity can be a  ticking time bomb! An electrical fire can happen at any time. Follow-up when a fuse or circuit breaker blows. Don't just reset the breaker or replace the fuse. Find out what caused the problem.

  • Cigarettes

Too many fires are caused from careless disposal of smoking materials

Eliminate mold problems

6/27/2018 (Permalink)

No one wants mold damage anywhere in their home, but the laundry room is a common and frustrating area where it makes itself known. You try to remove the mold yourself without success and finally ask, "what company near me holds the key to complete mold remediation?" The answer is SERVPRO, your local mold management and remediation experts.

It is not surprising that mold damage plagues your Middletown Springboro laundry room. Plenty of organic material and a wide range of microbial accelerants lie in your laundry room. The area is isolated, in an out of the way corner of your home. The long term leaks on the back of your washer itself is a treasure trove of nooks and crannies that hide mold growth. You sniff the musty odor every time you open the door to the laundry room.

Dealing with persistent mold is not a do it yourself job. All your efforts fail because mold is a tricky problem that requires remediation experts from SERVPRO to conquer. Mold can hide behind cabinet areas in places you may not be able to visibly see. Hoses and other plumbing connections may be examined for leaks and evidence of mold growth.

The washer and dryer themselves are possibly a source of mold contamination. Our Mold Professionals may require a Mold Test by a 3rd party for air quality and spore count, unless mold is visible then no mold test is needed. If Hoses and seals are the problems, a referral to an appliance repair specialist makes sense. Proper Containment and Mold Remediation can move your laundry room back to fresh-smelling instead of odor-creating.

If you have concerns and detect odors or see suspect microbial growth, call our friendly staff at SERVPRO of Warren County 513-932-3649 to set up a consultation.

Flood Damage Restoration

As a homeowner, flood damage can be very destructive, and if you do not take care of it right away, the extra water in your home can cause electrical hazards and expensive damage to your home. It can also lead to the growth of hazardous mold. Therefore, when the worst happens, you need to call our experts at SERVPRO of Warren County so that we can come in with our professionals and equipment to dry out your home as quickly as possible.

When your home floods it can be one of the most destructive forms of damage you can experience.

We also understand that it is a very stressful time. That is why our team of caring, trained and professional Water Damage Technicians is here when you need us at any time. We will lead you through the process, step by step, and do all that is needed efficiently and quickly, so we can get your home and life back to normal as soon as possible.  When the unexpected happens, we at SERVPRO of Warren County can be to your home quickly to get your home cleaned up. With our rapid response, your walls, floors, and personal property will have a much better chance of being restored to its original state.

Sources from outside or inside the structure can cause water intrusions to your home. Excessive rain can over saturate the ground, which results in hydrostatic pressure. This happens when the moisture outside your home or foundational wall is greater than the pressure inside. Since water naturally seeks out lower pressure, this can result in foundational leaks, and even cracking. We use professional equipment at SERVPRO of Warren County to efficiently and quickly remove the water before it begins to cause damage to your structure and other, secondary water problems. We will also bring in dehumidifiers which work to get rid of any moisture and start moving the air to assist in drying out your home. Once the water and moisture are entirely removed, we clean, sanitize and treat with an antimicrobial agent to ensure that you don’t experience any mold growth. We work with you each step of the way and can also work with your insurance company so that your claim gets processed as fast as possible.

When you experience any flood damage, contact us right away at SERVPRO of Warren County so that we can quickly come out and restore your property. We have the skilled technicians on hand at all hours to assist you when you call us at 513-932-3649.

Mold in your home

4/25/2018 (Permalink)

Mold vs. Human. Which species prefers temperatures between 50 and 70 degrees to live? Answer: Both

The battle against mold damage developing in your home is a constant one. Since mold is everywhere, in the air and on many surfaces throughout our environment, exposure is inevitable where moisture is present.

Damp, dark spaces within your East Hamilton Fairfield home are perfect breeding grounds for mold damage. However, controlling the sources of moisture found in your home can significantly increase your chance of avoiding these types of damages from developing in your house entirely. At SERVPRO we prefer to maintain a relative humidity level below 50%, promptly repairing plumbing leaks, damaged roofs, and windows. Thoroughly cleaning and drying any areas affected by flooding, properly ventilating your shower, laundry room and cooking area, all of which greatly increase your chances.

However, how do you know what mold even looks like if you have never seen it before? Mold growths often look like common dirt blotches but may develop into patches with many different colors and have a musty odor associated with them. If you find mold spores growing in your home, there is no reason to discover which type of mold you have. If you can see it, or smell mold, a possible health risk may already be present, requiring you to contact a restoration company, like SERVPRO, to deal with the situation properly.

A company with expertly trained remediation technicians can perform the proper services and repair the source of moisture causing the issue. The best thing you can do is have the mold removed and work on ways to prevent future growths from forming within your living space. SERVPRO technicians highly suggest seeking professional assistance with any area larger than 10 square feet. It is likely that you do not have the resources or experience to handle the larger contaminated areas on your own.

Contact SERVPRO of Warren County today for additional information or assistance regarding mold contamination in your home. We are here to help (513) 932-3649.

Floating the carpet

At SERVPRO of Warren County we like to showcase some of the many process we use to restore items rather than replace them. The key to helping both the client and the Insurance Company are providing great service and keeping cost low. One of the ways we reduce cost is to restore rather than replace.

In this picture we see a section of carpet being 'floated', floating is when an air mover is used to push air underneath a carpet to aid in drying it after a water damage. This is not an option in every scenario, but if the water is category 1, and does not contain any potential health concerns then we can dry it in place. This saves the carpet from having to be replaced which can be very costly. Call us at anytime for we are emergency services 513-932-3649

Fire tips

4/20/2018 (Permalink)

House fires make up the majority of disasters Red Cross responds to each year.

Below are eight important fire safety tips:

#1 Make sure your street number is visible from the street so that public safety personnel can quickly locate your property in case of emergency.

#2 Prevent landscaping from growing over and around fire hydrants. The time it takes to search for a fire hydrant could be critical!

#3 Turn off electrical, including ceiling fans, before leaving your residence for an extended period. Ceiling fan motors can overheat and cause fires if left on for extended periods.

#4 The sale, offering for sale, display, possession or discharge of fireworks by any person or entity within Rancho Mirage is prohibited.

#5 Do not store flammable items near a heat source, such as a hot water heater, as they can combust.

#6 Fire extinguishers should always be kept in the home and checked on an annual basis. Fire extinguishers are a requirement for businesses.

#7 Keep fresh batteries in your smoke detectors by replacing them twice a year. A good reminder is to change them when you set your clocks ahead/back for daylight saving time.

#8 Keep a wrench near your gas shut off valve at all times and consider turning off the gas when you leave your residence for an extended period.

Give us a call at SERVPRO of Warren County and we will help you in the event that there is a fire or flood in your home. We are available 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year.

Mold experts

4/20/2018 (Permalink)

What's causing the mold to grow? It could be a leaky pipe, humid basement or a heavy rainstorm that flooded your entire first floor. The size of the problem is less important than your ability to repair the source of moisture. It’s imperative to stop further moisture intrusion, otherwise, the mold will just continue to grow and spread.

Mold growth in a basement, attic or crawl space is relatively common because residents don't see these areas often, and they can be very humid.

It’s not worth risking the potential health issues, and mold will simply continue to devalue your property until the problem becomes so rampant that the home is uninhabitable. Nobody wants to purchase a seller's mold issue. Attic mold almost never affects the indoor air quality in the living space, but it sure threatens real estate deals.

Regardless of whether you’re on the buying or selling end of the transaction, be sure you understand the laws about informing a purchasing party about home defects. The law in most states, generally, is that you have to disclose all known risks, which includes evidence of mold in the home. Providing the details of a previous inspection, mold lab test results or even simply stating that stains on a wall might be mold could be considered sufficient disclosure. We are the right call for mold damage in your home

4/19/2018 (Permalink)

A continuous state of elevated humidity is a primary cause of excessive microbial growth in for residences and can quickly increase the amount of damage that follows. Other factors, such as the presence of absorbent materials in the home can also play a role in how rapidly microbial growth occurs.

Mold remediation experts know that the existence of future invasive water can cause the microbial problem to return, rendering mold remediation efforts useless. Once we eliminate these sources, we can then begin removing mold-damaged materials, laundering and cleaning household items and furniture, and caring for the carpeting throughout the home. Walls that harbor mold, even if dormant, need cleaning and dried.

Here to help after any kind of storm damages

4/16/2018 (Permalink)

When a strong thunderstorm passes through any area, the potential for storm damage can range from very minimal to leaving behind significant amounts of damage in homes and anything that gets in its path. In fact, it is not uncommon for a storm to take off the roof of a home in seconds or to flood the house with water. In some situations, the homeowner may not be able to do anything to prepare for the devastation that it does, especially when there is little warning in advance. This is also why so many weather stations are often focused on telling the people in their immediate and surrounding areas what is going on before the storm hits the areas.

Removing all of the water from a home after a storm is not as simple as some people think. In fact, these jobs should only be done by professionals who have the expertise to complete the job by using the most innovative equipment in the industry. So, for those of you who have storm damage that has affected your home, you can contact at SERVPRO of Warren County technicians for assistance at 513-932-3649 today.

Storm damage

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Flood damage is a water event that requires professional help. A bucket and mop or shop vacuum are not up to the challenge. The sheer amount of water quickly overwhelms any do it yourself attempt. The experienced technicians from SERVPRO employ powerful, industrial strength pumps and extractors to evacuate the water fast. Speed is critical because of the progressive nature of water damage.

Many structures, items, and surfaces can emerge nearly good as new if water does not have the chance to soak into and begin the process of disintegration. Although building materials like finished wood, concrete or cinder block may be able to shed water without much change, drywall, insulation, ceiling tiles, carpeting, and other porous components risk swelling, crumbling, and delamination if soaked for any period of time.

SERVPRO of Warren County  employees learn dozens of targeted strategies to quickly and successfully remove water from you place of business or home. Once the obvious water is gone, the crew uses high-efficiency fans and dehumidifiers to complete the job, drawing residual moisture out of contents and structure.

Fire damage

4/11/2018 (Permalink)

Kitchen fire in Mason,OH

Despite the specialized fire prevention and detection systems that we have in our buildings, fire damage remains a top concern. It is also worth noting that different challenges arise from different fire situations. While we expect to remove the dirt that smoke residues leave behind, there are several processes that restorers perform to retur your Middeltown Springboro home to its former state, and all that requires specific equipment and skills.

You need to treat all fire damage events in Warren County as an emergency to prevent further damage. When our SERVPRO team arrives at your property, we perform a pretest and identify items we can replace, clean, and those that need further examination. From our inspection, it is possible to determine the scope of the loss and share with the adjuster, and after that schedule the estimated mitigation processes.

When water comes into contact with some smoke particles, odors may result. Where possible, our SERVPRO technicians remove the odor source and perform deodorization. When the smells are coming from cracks, we direct deodorizing fog or smoke into those spaces by using thermal foggers.

At SERVPRO of Warren County  , We're Faster To Any Size Disaster whether it is storm, mold, fire or water related.

Smoke and soot cleanup

2/22/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:
Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Warren County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme odor.

Control Mold Damage By Drying Wet Materials Quickly.

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. If you can see or smell mold, a health risk may be present. You do not need to know the type of mold growing in your home, and CDC does not recommend or perform routine sampling for molds. No matter what type of mold is seen, you should remove it. Since the effect of mold on people can vary greatly, either because of the amount or type of mold, you can not rely on sampling and culturing to know your health risk. The best practice is to remove the mold and work to prevent future growth.

Experiencing a Water Loss

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage can be costly and is never convenient. If you experience a water loss, we recommend that you call a certified water restoration company to handle any size loss. This is especially true if you feel that the damage is more than you can handle. Often times, people feel that a small puddle in the middle of their floor isn’t much, until a few days later when they start smelling a musty odor, which usually results in mold.

There are DIY approaches, but they don't focus on water cleanup to the level that a restoration company will. It's why a flooded home or business should focus on professional mitigation and restoration from the very beginning, to avoid future problems.

Carpet Stain Removal

3/16/2016 (Permalink)

Basic Spot Removal Procedures

1. Attend to spills as soon as possible. Older stains are harder to remove.     Scrape or blot up excess reside of spot. Always blot; never rub carpet or upholstery fabric. Rubbing may cause irreparable fiber distortion.

2.     We always pretest spot removing solutions in an inconspicuous area before applying to spot to ensure the performance of our procedure and safety of your fabric. We inspect closely for dye transfer or changes in the fabrics appearance.

3.     When attempting to remove a spot, remember, like dissolves like. A water-based stain will dissolve in water-based solution (sometimes water just works!). Oil-based spills need to be dissolved using a solvent solution. SERVPRO makes sure the correct procedures are used.

4.     After removing the spot, we rinse the area blot with an absorbent cloth or towel.

Fire and Smoke Damage Tips

3/16/2016 (Permalink)

According to the NFPA cooking is the leading cause of house fires in the U.S. and 42% of house fires started in the Kitchen. Use timers and keep an eye on food when you are cooking.

Do:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilets bowls, holding tanks, and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on houseplants.
  • Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of sott from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

Don't:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting your local SERVPRO.
  • Attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting your local SERVPRO.
  • Attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV's, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water. (They may be contaminated.)
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor. (You may send them to one who regularly deals with restoration, ask us for names.)

Puff Back?

3/16/2016 (Permalink)

What is a puffback? A puffback occurs when a furnace has malfunctioned where a small and confined explosion has occurred in the burner chamber sending soot and smoke throughout the home. The soot will attached itself to walls, ceilings, upholstery carpet and many other items within the home making it difficult to clean.  The soot travels throughout the house which you can see in this picture. SERVPRO of E.Hamilton/Fairfield is always here to help with the cleanup!

In terms of preventing puff backs it may be helpful to inspect your furnace every so often to eliminate the buildup of debris and/or contact your heating company if you begin to experience any sign of soot in proximity to your furnace.

Emergency Tips During a Water Damage

3/16/2016 (Permalink)

Here are a few steps to follow when a water damage first occurs:

1.) STOP THE WATER AT ITS SOURCE: The first thing you need to take when you first notice water damage is to find the source of the water and cut it off at the source. The most common cause of water damage is a leaky or busted water pipe. Either seal the leak or turn off your house's water source to stop more water damage from occurring. Even if you have insurance, you should take action to prevent further damage.

2.) NOTIFY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY: Once you have stopped the water at its source, notify your insurance company. Now, if it's in the middle of the night, you can wait until the next morning. Even if the damage is not insured, your insurance agent can often help you find someone to help you repair the damage.

3.) REMOVE THE WATER: After you repair the source of the water damage and stop more from coming in it is time to get the excess water out. A mop, a broom, and a wet/dry vacuum are all common tools many have available to get as much water out as possible.

4.) VENTILLATE: Lastly, be sure the proper ventilation is being applied to the affected area in order to prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
